Yarn density refers to the thickness of the yarn. It directly affects the appearance style and intrinsic performance of the fabric. For example: thickness, fineness, stiffness and wear resistance, etc.
Fibers and yarns are mostly thin and have complex cross-sectional shapes. Measuring their diameter directly is difficult. Usually the corresponding relationship between yarn weight, length and cross-sectional area is used to express its fineness. It is usually represented by indirect indicators such as New English Count (Ne), New Metric Count (Nm), Denier (D) and Tex (Tt).
New English Count (Ne)
It is the number of times the length of one pound of yarn can be divided by 840. New english count is customarily used to represent cotton yarn. Also referred to as 'Ne' or 'S'. Calculation formula: Ne=L[yard]/(G[lb]*840)
New Metric Count (Nm)
It is the length of yarn in meters of one gram of yarn.New metric count is customarily used to represent wool yarn, linen yarn and silk spinning yarn. Also referred to as 'Nm'. Calculation formula: Nm=L[m]/G[g]
Denier (D)
It is the weight of 9000 meters length of yarn.Denier is customarily used to represnt silk yarn and chemical fiber filament yarn. Also referred to as 'ND' or 'D'. Calculation formula: D=G[g]/L[m]*9000
Tex(Tt)
It is the weight of 1000 meters length of yarn. Tex can used to represnt all yarn. Also referred to as 'tex' or 'Tt'. Calculation formula: Tt=G[g]/L[m]*1000
These four indicators can be converted to each other: Tt=1000/Nm, Tt=D/9, Nm=9000/D, Tt=C/N (C is the conversion constant and changes according to the type of yarn).
Yarn density classification
It can be roughly divided into 4 grades according to the thickness of the yarn.
Coarse: >32Tt or <18S
Medium: 31Tt~20Tt or 19S~29S
Fine: 19Tt~10Tt or 30S~60S
Extra fine: <10Tt or >60S
Because the classification standards will be different in different countries and there will be more levels. This standard can only be used as a reference.
Case Analysis
The specification of our product is 70D*21S. The composition is 68% cotton 32% nylon. It can be seen that the warp yarn of this product is 70D nylon yarn and the weft yarn is 21S cotton yarn.
